This Asian mosquito was first collected in the United States in New York and New Jersey in 1998, which coincided with the first recorded cases of West Nile Virus in the New York City area a year later in 1999. The Aedes japonicus Notre Dame colony was established from specimens collected as larvae in water filled containers (flower pots and tires) in residential areas of South Bend, Indiana in the summer of 2005. This mosquito is suspected of being a vector of the Japanese Encephalitis virus in Asia and the West Nile in the United States. While Aedes japonicus has not been incriminated as a major vector of West Nile virus in the United States, it is nevertheless of concern to public health agencies because of its fairly rapid colonization of a large part of the north eastern and midwestern United States and its propensity to lay eggs in flooded containers found around human dwellings. È morta in ospedale a Cagliari la donna di Marrubiu, che due giorni fa è risultata positiva alla Febbre del Nilo, settimo caso accertato in Sardegna. La donna, da quanto si apprende, era affetta anche da altre patologie ed era già ricoverata in ospedale
La notizia della morte della donna ha fatto subito il giro del paese d’origine, dove adesso c’è preoccupazione. “Ho ricevuto qualche ora fa la notizia, siamo vicini alla famiglia – ha detto all’ANSA il sindaco di Marrubiu, Luca Corrias – sia il 15 settembre che nei giorni scorsi abbiamo sollecitato la Provincia di Oristano affinché intervenga subito con le disinfestazioni. Vogliamo che avvengano non solo nella borgata di Sant’Anna ma nella totalità del paese, vista la densità di zanzare e che è attraversato da un corso d’acqua”. (ANSA).
